One Woman Empire
I am Empress Onyxx, I like to call myself an historical archeologist and I teach the history that we did not learn in school. I started my journey on social media by teaching the experiences of Black women in the United States. It was 2021, I had gotten into a fight with a few friends who just so happen to be white and it was then that I realized that they were treating me like a mammy. My first series was the stereotypes of Black women. While researching, I clicked on all the blue links, well any random link. I research all the references and learn so much more from doing that than from the main article, that's where you find the information we were never taught.
My Story
I teach Reconstruction through to the Civil Rights but my love is Reconstruction and Jim Crow because I believe that this is when we see today taking shapes. The laws passed in this era shape todays society.
My goal two-fold. One is to teach the correct, un-whitewashed history of the United States. Two is to tie the events of yesterday today. I am a firm believer that you have to know your past to understand the present and know what may happen in the future. If people (white people) understood what happened in the past they would not be surprised by race relations today. They would believe Black and Brown people when they talk about the injustice they experience in this country.
I crochet while I teach because I have ADHD and through the years I have learned that many of my followers have ADHD as well. The crocheting helps them concentrate on what I am teaching so everyone wins. The most rewarding thing for me is when someone leaves a comment saying that they have learned so much or when a teacher asks to use my video in their class; then I know I am doing something right.
